Reflection for the Sixth Sunday of Easter

Worship is the practice of acknowledging, together with others, that God is worthy of our praise and our attention. As we fast from worshiping together in the same place, let us promise ourselves that, when we can meet again, we will worship, gather before God with our sisters and brothers in faith, with full awareness of the privilege and blessing that it is to be able to do so in person. And “while we are apart, one from the other,” let us find ways to remember that worship is the fourth step in walking the Way of Love (Turn, Learn, Pray, and Worship) that we invite to deepen and strengthen our walk with Jesus Christ.

We miss each other’s personal presence, but we know that we are together in the Body of Christ. Let us cherish that knowledge, and make it a part of every Spirit-lifted breath that we take.

May God bless you, Jesus walk with you, the Spirit lift you in the week ahead. Each day in the week ahead will have a quote about worship that I hope will strengthen and cheer all of us.

With love,

Mother Georgia+

Morning Prayer & Coffee Hour, May 10, 2020

A Reflection for the Fifth Sunday of Easter

St. Paul invited followers of Jesus Christ to “pray without ceasing.”

The Cistercian monk, Brother Lawrence, told people who came to him for spiritual counsel that the practice of the presence of God could bring them the peace and satisfaction they sought.

Jesus gave his followers what we call the Lord’s Prayer when they asked him to teach them to pray.

The Way of Love, Presiding Bishop Michael Curry’s encouraging program to help us to develop practices for a Jesus-centered life, asks us to Turn, to Learn, and, as we take action this Sunday, to Pray—to dwell intentionally with God, recognizing that we are always in the Presence of the Divine. He invites us to have humble hearts, yet to ask boldly for the grace of God’s encompassing love.

There are some “P” words connected with prayer, and we hope that learning them, and engaging in the actions they describe, will lead us ever more into the Way of becoming “living stones” with which the Kingdom of God can be built.

Now—this strange, seemingly limited time in which we find ourselves—is a wonderful time to learn more about Program (think the Baptismal Covenant), Process (the development of a prayer life grows gradually), and Practice (choosing and using a prayer method that has meaning for each of us). I am glad to discuss this further on the telephone, or to engage in email discussions with anyone who would like to explore the rich territory of prayer. Each day of this week, there will be a prayer, and a way to use it, published in our Facebook group, and by email.

May this unexpected pause in our lives bring unexpected blessings.

Peace be with you,
Mother Georgia+

Morning Prayer & Coffee Hour, May 3, 2020

A REFLECTION FOR THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
This week, we continue a series of sermons that focus on the Way of Love: Practices for a Jesus-Centered Life. All of the seven practices—Turn, Learn, Pray, Worship, Bless, Go, and Rest—invite us to use two other practices, also essential for a church seeking a new rector, and for Christians trying to determine how to live in a time of unprecedented change. With Reflection and Discernment, we can look at our lives as individuals and in community, to see how they can lead us to further understanding of who Jesus Christ is, and what he asks of us.

Last week, in considering Turn, we looked at the disciples on the road to Emmaus, and how they turned from fear and doubt as they realized that it was Jesus who was explicating the scriptures to them, and breaking bread with them. They saw that the old ways weren’t going to work any longer. They turned in a new direction.

This week, through the prism of looking at Jesus as the Good Shepherd, we Learn about Jesus as both a care-giver and a leader. A child in Sunday School once said that she thought Jesus the Good Shepherd was like Mr. Kennedy, the policeman that helped kids to cross a busy street near their school. Asked if he also led the kids down the street, she said that was more like the Drum Major leading the band down the field with his big baton keeping time.

Like the little girl, we can have a hard time understanding exactly who Jesus is for us. There are familiar words like “Lord” and “Savior” but it is worth reflecting on how Jesus has appeared in our lives, and what he means for each of us. Who keeps you safe from traffic? Who marks the time to keep you marching, and playing with the rest of the band?

Consider whether prayer life with more rhythm and regularity, a time of Bible Study that involves both the disciplines of reading and prayer, and the sharing of fellowship, might make the music of your life sweeter.

God’s bright blessings on you in the week to come. He is risen! Practice Resurrection!

Morning Prayer & Coffee Hour, April 26, 2020

Alleluia! He is Risen!

Beloved Friends in Jesus Christ,

With today’s sermon we begin a series of shared meditations on the Way of Love that Presiding Bishop Michael Curry has called “Practices for a Jesus-Centered Life.” These practices are Turn, Learn, Pray, Worship, Bless, Go, and Rest.

You can learn more about these practices from the following website: https://episcopalchurch.org/way-of-love.

This time, which may seem like a “time between” offers the opportunity to learn new things, and to make them a part of our incarnate (embodied) lives. Often, humans can learn something intellectually, engaging the mind, but our emotions and our bodies are NOT engaged. As we look at our lives as followers of Jesus Christ through the lens of the Way of Love, we have a chance to make sure that all three centers—intellectual, emotional, and physical—take part in this first step on the path, as defined by Bishop Curry: TURN to meet Christ on the road of our lives.

Peace be with you,
Mother Georgia+

Morning Prayer & Coffee Hour, April 19, 2020

This Sunday, join us for our pre-recorded Virtual Morning Prayer Service which can be viewed at anytime AND our Live Coffee Hour from 8:45am – 10:00am. Details follow below…
Dear brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ,

I don’t remember a more beautiful spring. Our flowering trees have been magnificent, the bluebells so abundant in the woods and along streams, the redbud and lilacs now opening to the sun. The Dominican monk and mystic known as Meister Eckhart said, “If the only prayer you ever said were thank you, that would be enough.”

This is our present moment: beauty for which the only response can be praise, and an illness passing over the land like a dark shadow. It seems the home God has given us has been telling us for quite a few years that we are not being the good stewards God has asked us to be. The question is: how can things be different? Fires in the western United States and all over the continent of Australia, floods in the mountains of West Virginia where mountain top removal mining has dumped waste into the creeks that usually carry rainfall, a plague that has spread to nearly every country in the world, swarming locusts covering many miles in Africa, the bees that fertilize our crops dying off, oceans clogged with islands of plastic, the ice caps that keep those oceans in balance melting: these are all problems that are dangerous, but which scientists say can change if humans change their behavior.

As we face the problems that, in many instances, our miss-use and over-use of resources have caused, let us look to the gracious God who has given us what Eucharistic prayer C calls “our Island home…this fragile earth,” remembering that it is by God’s will it “was created, and has its being.” Let us ask for wisdom to effective remediation and conservation of what God has given us. Again and again, God has called us to return.
Let us in this holy season that celebrates the Resurrection of our Lord, seek guidance for ways to resurrect the suffering parts of our planet.

Let us go forth in faith, live in hope, and work to care for our island home, knowing that in the blood of Jesus, we are reconciled, and by his wounds, we are healed.

With love,
Mother Georgia+

Easter Sunday Morning Prayer, April 12, 2020

Beloved in Jesus Christ,

“He is risen, he is risen, tell it out with joyful voice! He has burst his three days’ prison—let the whole wide earth rejoice.”

Do you feel that when our present hard travail is over, you will burst out of prison, too? It seems a lot of people feel that way.

Despite the strangeness of this time, we will, nonetheless, celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, and a group of people from Church of Our Redeemer, Clarke Parish in Berryville, and Christ Church worked hard to make a virtual Easter celebration happen. We (the Rev. Justin Ivatts, the Very Rev. Matt Rhodes, and myself) were supported by musicians, administrators, and the Holy Spirit to bring this service for Easter together, and we hope it is rich and meaningful for you.

Please read the bulletin to see all the names of bright spirits who made this happen. Personally, I must thank our administrator, Laura Harrigan, and musician and vestry member, Susan Hollinger, for all their help and encouragement. Despite the challenges, this was a joyful effort, and these two ladies helped your supply priest to rejoice, indeed.

He is risen, indeed, and we see him in the eyes and smiles of those who share with us in the Body of Christ.

God bless you and keep you.

With love and good wishes,
Mother Georgia+

A PROMISE: when this pandemic abates, and we can meet again, we will have an Easter Eucharist in the sanctuary, and a dinner in the parish hall, and it will be wonderful!,
